Re: iZelda
The layout:
http://www.metalink.net/
has been done before.
It looks like he just used a pre-scripted website engine.
I apologize if you did program it from scratch, because if you did then I'm sure you put alot of work into it... but just saying, it looks a bit redundant.
nice photoshop work though.

History Lesson:
The advertising section started off in the days of EZBoard as a remedy for spam control for all of the users who were making excessive "CHECK OUT MY SITE" posts in our general area and then leaving right after.
We (Dann, Kao, and I) originally attempted to deal with the situation by deleting or editting the posts, but after awhile we just figuerd it would be easier to make a section specifically for people to show case their websites and other related things separate from the general areas instead of deleting posts every day.

I meant today.
We used to have an advertising forum on VGChat, too, but, seriously, what the **** good would it do any forum today?

Re: iZelda
It keeps threads like this out of the way of General Chat so that, if you don't want to read them, you don't have to even look in the forum.

I use the New Posts button, which is the only practical method for a forum with as few posts between semi-daily check-ups as Zelda Power. I'm seeing this thread no matter what. You're basically making the argument that they're in a separate forum because they have no place on the site otherwise, so why allow them at all?

Re: iZelda
They don't have any place on the rest of the site, but that doesn't mean we can't have a place for them here. I don't use the new posts menu, but I wonder if there's a way to configure it so people can choose which forums they want to see new posts from. Or if we could just cut this forum out from it. I agree that it doesn't serve the wider purpose of the boards as a community, even if I don't feel like there's any harm in its continued existence either.

Re: iZelda
We explored the issue of how to only include certain forums in the New Posts, and while I forget what they said they did, it had something to do with entering a url, one that somehow used the forum number to subtract the forum you didn't want from the equation, and you would have to bookmark that url for yourself. Although somehow including the option to customize the New Posts button for yourself in your profile/options would be a little nicer.

Re: iZelda
Yeah, it seems achievable. We're waiting for Kao's okay before anyone messes around with the source code, though. I'll keep you informed.

If vBulletin uses MySQL, it should be a quick fix as long as you can locate the code related to the query.
example:
(SELECT * from BLALBLA where NewPost='true' and ForumName != 'Advertising' )
at most you might have to join a couple tables together.
Then again, some coders go to great lengths to over complicate a simple process, or to make a simple process complicated.

Re: iZelda
If it's any help, I remembered that I had bookmarked a personal New Posts page for VGC that I didn't end up using, but I used it to figure out an example of what the url for a New Posts page looks like when it's excluding certain forums. For example, here's what it would look like to exclude the advertising forum:
http://www.zeldapower.com/forum/sear...new&exclude=45
And to exclude more than one forum at once, you'd just add a comma and the additional forum number. So if you wanted to exclude the advertising forum and, say, general PC, you would make it,
http://www.zeldapower.com/forum/sear...&exclude=45,64

Yeah, Teej is working on the changes now. Should be in place soon if it isn't already.

If they are using a loop, the MySQL query would be a bit easier. If they were manually inserting links, your method would be very useful.
I assume that there already is an array set up. The admin would be able to fix this without touching that loop if he ads the argument into the MySQL query to ignore posts from this forum.
If it's set up typically, it will query (ask) the database how many new posts are on the board, and which forums they are in. The loop runs based on the query, and if the query ignores Advertising forum posts, the loop will automatically ignore it. Would post an example but in a hurry.
