Waypoint: The Sad, Strange End to Half-Life

Quote:
When Half-Life 2 was announced it was natural that I would seek out a fan forum, Halflife2.net, to find out more. I couldn't have known said site would become one of my primary social outlets. Too shy and nerdy to make many firm friends at school, here I could be confident, even cool. As part of the massive fan and modding community which gave rise to Counter-Strike, Dear Esther, and the gay agenda of Robert Yang, I learned how to express and to moderate myself—crucial elements of ordinary socialization. I was active for maybe seven years and made 18,870 posts.
I like a good wistful story about message board communities. (This may not come as a shock.) This is a good one, I think.

But the moderation drama! They had literal forum Illuminati. That's fantastic.

oh yeah i read that laidlaw post it was pretty cool

the article you linked made me think of foucault's pendulum the novel by umberto eco about conspiracy theories surrounding the templars

the books plot revolves around a process that much resembles how he describes the members of his forum weaving a mythological tapestry on the scant basis half life provides for it

the pacing is really bad actually its 500 pages of buildup and then 200 pages of stuff actually happening in terms of a plot and then the climax is rather silly but its well written

the name of the rose is much better that book is a pageturner
